The Competition Commission (CC) has today published detailed and wide-ranging proposals to open up bus markets across the country to greater competition.
This is the latest stage in the CC’s investigation into the local bus market in the UK (excluding London and Northern Ireland) and it is consulting on these proposals before it publishes its final report later this year. The full provisional decision on remedies is available on the CC’s website.
Tracy Jessop, Vice Chair of ATCO said:
“The proposals published today will require careful consideration and review to understand the full impacts and help inform the ATCO response to the consultation.
If the remedies do provide the necessary framework to increase competition this can only lead to a better offer for customers and should raise the quality of bus services overall.
It is worth noting that the Competition Commission has not been prescriptive in its remedies and recognises the diversity that exists across the local bus market in the UK. A ‘one-size fits all’ approach would not have been helpful, and this will give transport authorities the power to develop solutions, in partnership with the bus operators, that best suit the local circumstances.”
